چکیده

Previous studies have suggested that excessive losses of FVC and FEV1 were occurring in Vermont granite workers despite the fact that mean quartz levels existing in the industry were below the current OSHA standard of 100 ,ug/m3. We reexamined these losses in granite workers over an 8-year period, testing the workforce biennially from 1979 to 1987. All workers, including stone shed, quarry, and office, were offered forced spirometry using a 10-L water-sealed spirometer (Collins). In the peak year of participation (1983), 887 workers out of a total of approximately 1,400 were tested. Estimates of longitudinal loss were based on 711 workers who participated in at least three of the surveys. The mean age of this group was 42.9 years, and the mean years employed was 19.3 years; 21.4 percent were nonsmokers (NS), 34.2 percent were ex-smokers (ES), and 44.4 percent were current smokers (CS). Average annual losses of FVC were 0.018 (SD=0.056) L (CS, 0.025 L; NS, 0.006 L: and ES, 0.016 L). Average annual losses of FEV, were 0.030 (SD=0.041) L (CS, 0.038 L; NS, 0.020 L; and ES, 0.027 L). Analysis of covariance indicated that losses

Benefits from the correction of vitamin D deficiency in patients with pulmonary hypertension

Background: Vitamin D (Vit D) is linked to various conditions including musculoskeletal, metabolic and   cardiopulmonary diseases. However, it is not clear whether correction of vit D deficiency exerts any beneficial effect in patients with pulmonary hypertension. Methods: This study was a prospective uncontrolled longitudinal study. Patients with pulmonary hypertension and vit D d...

Deformation pattern and predictive value of right ventricular longitudinal strain in children with pulmonary arterial hypertension

BACKGROUND Right ventricular function has been identified as an important prognostic factor in children with pulmonary arterial hypertension. The aim of the study was to assess the deformation pattern and prognostic value of right ventricular longitudinal strain in children with pulmonary arterial hypertension. METHODS We prospectively evaluated 46 children (25 with pulmonary arterial hyperet...

Right Ventricular Longitudinal Strain: A Target Indicator in the Treatment of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a syndrome in which pulmonary arterial obstruction increases pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) leading to right ventricle (RV) failure. Progression and survival of patients with PAH are related to the ability of the RV to adapt to the chronically elevated pulmonary artery pressure (PAP), 1) hence, RV function is an important determinant of prognosis in...

Isolated pulmonary regurgitation causes decreased right ventricular longitudinal function and compensatory increased septal pumping in a porcine model

AIM Longitudinal ventricular contraction is a parameter of cardiac performance with predictive power. Right ventricular (RV) longitudinal function is impaired in patients with free pulmonary regurgitation (PR) following corrective surgery for Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). It remains unclear whether this is a consequence of the surgical repair, or whether it is inherent to PR. The aim of this study...

The Evaluation of Pulmonary Function Tests in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Introduction: Recently a relation between female sex hormones and severity of asthma symptoms has been proposed. As a common endocrine dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) could significantly influence the level of sex hormones in PCOS patients. Regarding the possible role of sex hormones in airway physiology, the present study was conducted to survey the effects of PCOS on pulmonary f...

Spirometric evaluation of pulmonary function in Yazd’s dental laboratory workers in 1398

abstract Introduction: Spirometry is a common device screening in occupational pulmonary disease. Dental laboratory workers usually are exposed to vapor, toxic gases, dust, metallic alloys, acrylics, and stones. Aim of This study was a Spirometric evaluation of the pulmonary function of Yazd’s dental laboratory workers. Method and materials: in this cross-sectional study 37 Yazd’dental tech...
